"C" is for cookie.... (?)

While I am a fan of Cookie Monster, that's not the "C" I'm thinking of.
I'm thinking of vitamin C and its powerful properties.
Many people ask me about detoxification. I thought I would address one way to detoxify efficiently and effectively... while remaining noninvasive!!
Vitamin C: What it is. Why it's important. How to use it for detoxification. How to use it to maintain health and build immunity.
What is Vitamin-C? Vitamin C is also known as ascorbic acid; it is the manufacturer of collagen - that which holds the body together.
Why is it important to you? There are so many reasons! Since vitamin C makes collagen it is crucial for cartilage, tissue, ligaments, tendons, wound repair, and gums. On top of that, it is valued for immune function, nerve transmitting, and is an antioxidant.
How do I use it for detoxification? I'm so glad you asked... this is the precious jewel of this month's blog. Using vitamin-C for a detoxification is simple, quick, and effective, not to mention cheap.
* Here's what you need: POWDERED mineral ASCORBATE C (without sodium - I hear it tastes terrible) -- the one I bought reads "Buffered C Crystals: Calcium Ascorbate Acid-Free"
* Here's what you need to do: Every 15 minutes take about 1/2 teaspoon of the powder (mixed with juice to avoid the bad taste) - this 1/2 teaspoon will probably be between 1800 and 2500 mg. Continue taking until you have watery diarrhea.
How do I use it to maintain health & build immunity? You want to do this flush weekly if your immune system is weak or if you've been exposed to a lot of toxins. Do it for a couple of months, taking 2,000 to 3,000 mg on the days you're not flushing. This will both build your immune system and help detoxify your system of toxins.
The flush will help you find your saturation point. Once you know this (say it's 50,000 mg), you can make a decision for your daily intake (about half - say, 25,000 mg). This will increase while your body builds up its vitamin C needs. Then, it will gradually decrease!
Do a flush at the first sign of a cold or flu.
Did You Know?* Humans are the only animals that don't produce their own vitamin C
* Vitamin C can help you detoxify environmental toxins, heavy metals in your body (mercury!!!!), and bad bacteria
* Stress of any kind causes vitamin C to be excreted in urine, meaning it needs to be replenished
* Vitamin C in food is destroyed when exposed to air - this is the difference between a fresh cut fruit or vegetable and one that's already been cut and exposed. For example, cantaloupe will lose 35 % of its vitamin C after being sliced (within 24 hours). Cucumbers, in less than three hours, will lose approximately 45 % of its vitamin C once sliced.
Vitamin C is associated with:
~~ reducing cancer rates
~~ boosting immunity
~~ adrenal gland hormone health
~~ protecting against and detoxifying from pollution and cigarette smoke
~~ speeding up wound repair
~~ reducing the risk of developing cataracts
~~ longer life expectancy
Once you do a flush, you'll realize how much vitamin C you really need. If you're like me, you may be surprised that your breaking point is 14,000 mg!!! Once you see this, you'll realize that the 186 mg of vitamin C you get from kale (3 1/2 oz) or 50 mg you get from oranges (3 1/2 oz) is really not going to make a dent in this deficit. Remember... you do not make vitamin C on your own. So put it in there....
And be well.

Consider Nutritional Testing
Happy New Year!
One of the best ways to help a client is to know their baseline levels. Sure, they have tests from their doctors but often these don't provide necessary information.
For example, someone is on anti-depressants. Ask for neurotransmitter tests and they say there aren't any. Who knows the state of their neurotransmitters? No one. Who prescribed medication to alter them? Their doctor. I'm not saying these meds don't help... I just think that knowing what's imbalanced might help before giving medication to change it.

In a recent interview with Ed Bauman, Share Guide Holistic Health Magazine (http://www.shareguide.com/) quoted him saying, "Doctors are sort of mechanical; they have a certain protocol. For instance, if your TSH is above four, they give you thyroid. If your cholesterol is over 200, they give you a statin drug. If your blood pressure is above 140, they give you a hypertensive drug and so forth. They’re not wondering what all is going on here? And the element of environmental toxicity doesn’t even enter their minds--or the fact that some of the medications are creating adverse interactions that will cause fairly severe side effects in a couple of years. They may not cause the side effects in the first couple of months, but over time you have these interactions, and people have liver issues, and gut issues, and bone issues, and neuropathy. There are all kinds of fairly advanced degenerative situations that are very, very hard to treat and correct. It’s hard to correct late-stage burnout. So my attitude is work with children and work with young people and let people do the nutritional evaluation to prevent this. If it costs them $1,000 that’s the best money they ever spent."
Holistic testing is an out-of-pocket expense for the patient. Of course this isn't too appealing when you consider how much they're probably paying for health insurance. Still, if that's not working for them and their health is important, the testing is not an option. Well, I guess it is an option if neither of you mind the guessing game and the myriad of supplements and combinations of treatments that you'll go through hoping to help them find their unique path of healing.
Allow me to share part of my story. I am by no means wealthy and at the time of this situation, I was a full-time student and a full-time employee. I went to a naturopath hoping to deal with some issues, one of which was emotional volatility. She urged me to take a neurotransmitter saliva test. At $170, I just couldn't. She explained, as I have above, that she could not know for sure what to do for me if she didn't know for sure what wasn't functioning. In my quest for deliverance from my symptoms, I agreed. What a good decision! The test results were delivered, I began a 6-week protocol, and I have never experienced those symptoms again. Worth it? Definitely.

There are so many tests that are not up to par in the medical world. Neurotransmitter testing, or the lack thereof, falls short. Hormone testing doesn't give a patient (or their nutritional consultant) the whole picture (TSH, T3, T4, Free T3, Free T4, Adrenal Stress Index). Food allergy tests are generally IgE tests (E for Emergency), which only tests the deadly allergic responses (obviously, you would already know this since they're, well, obvious - hives, lung failure, rapid heart rate, passing out). An IgA and IgG test would alert you to any antibodies present when faced with foods that the body is allergic and/or sensitive to. How many lives would be changed if they just removed their food allergens?

These are just a few examples and a few explanations of the values of nutritional testing at a holistic level. I have tons more as well as many tests available. If you're interested, please don't hesitate to contact me.
Peace and wellness to you all.

Cold and Flu - Tis the Season
It has been far too long since I've posted. I will try to make it more regular, really. It's not like I'm lacking in information to share!
At this time, I must share about cold and flu season since the cold tried to get me.
Hydroptherapy - this is the key word of the hour.
I started to feel tired. My eyes were burning. My throat started tickling and then hurting. My ears were echoing every heart beat. What to do?
Hot and cold water - that's the idea behind hydrotherapy.
There are two ways to go about this. One is with a footbath. The other is without.
With a footbath: Set the water to hot and have boiling water at the ready. Sink your feet into the hot water with an ICE cold washcloth on the back of your neck (ice cold means out of the freezer!). Keep adding boiling water. Your toes should be bright and pink. Keep adding hot water and rotating colder and colder ice wash cloths for 15 minutes!
Without footbath: Take a few washcloths soaked in water and wrung out tightly. Keep some in the freezer. The others, pour boiling hot water over. Hot water wash cloth over the nose and sinuses for 3 minutes followed by an ice cold wash cloth for 1 minute. Repeat rotation 4-5 times.

Hot and cold water rotations increase ciculation in the body. Don't think for a moment that cold or heat protect or increase your chances of getting a cold. Manipulate these forces to increase your chances of maintaining health.
Drink water, herbal teas, and lemon juice (from fresh squeezed lemons).
If you choose zinc lozenges make sure that sugar and sucrose are not in the ingredients as sugar keeps your immune system from operating optimally.

Be well.
Please write if you have any questions...
